Overview
The Luan Art Gallary involved extensive refurbishment of the existing Father Matthew Hall building (dated circa. 1897) and the construction of a new modern extension over two storeys, overlooking the river Shannon.
Refurbishment and adaptation of the existing structure to become a contemporary visual arts space was demanding, with new works requiring extensive groundworks on a difficult site beside the river with two different types of piled foundations. The overall project was very successful, with the new contemporary art gallery being the first purpose-built municipal art gallery located in the midlands of Ireland.
The project gave an existing structure a new life of 50+ years together with a new multi-sensory wing in the centre of the town, forming part of the Athlone Cultural Revival Programme for the Arts.
The building was named Best Cultural Building of 2013 by the RIAI, and received a Civic Trust Award in 2014.
