Overview

Located in Castlebar, Co. Mayo, Abbeyalainn Primary Care Centre was delivered as part of the Irish Government’s Primary Care Strategy, aiming to enhance healthcare accessibility and integration nationwide. This facility is one of a series of Primary Care Centres (PCCs) constructed under this initiative, reflecting the government’s commitment to modernizing community healthcare infrastructure.

The two-storey building accommodates a comprehensive range of healthcare services, including GP practices, Community Mental Health services, public health nursing, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and dental services. Supplementary amenities such as conference facilities, a café, and a pharmacy further complement the primary healthcare provision.

The building features two main wings connected by two cross wings, forming a central courtyard that enhances the flow of natural light and creates a visually appealing environment. A standout feature is the double-height reception area with a distinctive glass façade, linking the two main wings and providing a welcoming focal point. Natural daylight is maximized throughout the building, with the courtyard illuminating ground-floor circulation routes and zinc-clad light tunnels bringing daylight into first-floor corridors.

Externally, the structure incorporates green and grey fibre cement cladding, effectively breaking up the long elevations while offering durability and aesthetic value. The project’s efficient design and resource use align with the strategy’s objectives, establishing a benchmark for subsequent Primary Care Centres.
